Need Help Getting Baby to Sleep? 7 Ways to Get Your Baby on a Sleep Schedule.

Sleep. It refreshes, rejuvenates and restores. Though our bodies are, for the most part, quiet during sleep, there is actually a bustle of activity going on inside us. Getting baby to sleep and having your baby on a regular sleep schedule is so important, that it is worth exploring and discussing.

Not only is a proper and regular sleep schedule vitally important for your baby's health, it also improves mood, function and physical development. Here are five major benefits that regular and sound sleep offer your child:

1. It helps your baby grow strong and develop quick reactions and coordination: studies show that babies who get regular sleep have improved reaction time, better reflexes and even better use of oxygen.

2. It helps keep baby's mood even and happy: obviously, babies get cranky and cry longer and more often when they are tired, and if they are sleep deprived, or on an irregular schedule, they can be very challenging to deal with.

3. It helps with memory function and development: Dr. Nilesh Dave, medical director of the Sleep Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center says "During sleep, your brain will process a lot and turn it into long-term memory," he says. "Memory is a function of what we think sleep does."

4. It keeps baby from falling asleep at times that are not part of the planned schedule: I'm sure every parent has experienced times when their baby fell asleep in the car, or while out somewhere, only to have the baby wake up irritable and still tired. If a baby is well rested, and if the parents plan their activities to accommodate baby's established sleep schedule, then more often than not, the baby will stay awake in the car, etc, because it's during the established non - sleep time.

5. It keeps baby's hormones balanced: Our bodies use sleep to release certain hormones, Dr. Dav

Help Baby Sleep With Music

Are you struggling to get your baby to sleep? Have you tried everything and your baby still won't relax? A proven method to lull babies to sleep is music. From the beginning of time, mothers have sung lullabies to their babies and now science is proving that mothers always know best! You can help baby sleep by providing your baby with soothing lullabies

Mothers have been singing lullabies to their babies since time immemorial. When I was a new mother attempting to help my baby sleep, I, too, attempted to sing lullabies. But I often forgot the lyrics, so I hummed whatever came into my head. Once I found myself singing a Led Zeppelin rock song, (which might explain my now grown son's proclivity for heavy metal music).

Whatever the song, however, he always went to sleep peacefully in my arms.
Occasionally, when I didn't have the time to sing to him, I put on some soft music, and he would happily nod off. This was the era of the LP, so there wasn't much on the market in the way of formal lullabies, so I played classical music. I also experimented with playing the piano for and during his nap time and found that it worked like a charm.

Recent research has proven the efficacy of playing soothing music for the purpose of inducing sleep in subjects of all ages. Interestingly, when babies heard the voices of their own mothers, they fell asleep. When unfamiliar voices sang to them they became restless and wakeful. However, when they listened to soothing instrumental music, the babies fell asleep easily.

It would follow, therefore, that instrumental music is an effective addition to or substitute for mother's sweet pipes. When the instrumental music is composed for and integrated into lullaby form, consisting of simple melodies and harmonies, gentle mood and triple meter, (which mimics the resting heartbeat), it results in a successful synthesis of art and science. Lullabies, therefore, which are composed specifically for the inducement of rest and sleep, would be the most suitable choice for baby's dream time.

A wonderful technique to help baby sleep is to play the instrumental lullaby music while holding, rocking, or quietly sitting with the child. It might also be effective to softly hum along with the music. What a beautiful way to communicate a mother's love to her precious child. Get comfortable, preferably in a rocking chair, and hold your baby while softly humming or playing beautiful instrumental music. Take slow, deep breaths to calm yourself. Your baby will intuit your calmness and relax even more. This has always worked for me, and not only did the baby get a good night's sleep, so did I!

I composed the lullabies on "Good Night Lullabies" for my grandchildren. Drawing upon my experience as a young mother who enjoyed playing music for my son for his nap and/or bedtime, I endeavored, on some level, to recreate a similar atmosphere for his children. It has been a blessed experience to have held and rocked my grandchildren to sleep while listening to the lullabies I recorded just for them. And to my exquisite satisfaction.

Regardless of your parenting experience, safety should be your first priority while putting a new nursery together. A few things to pay attention to, is the direction of sunlight coming in through the windows or skylights, and safety within the nursery. It is also important to address any potential safety issues outside the nursery within the home. The sunlight can often disrupt sleep causing discomfort for your child during the day. Do remember, the little things that can affect us while sleeping can also affect your baby. Outside noise is another thing to consider, so do not have your nursery facing a busy street as the noise will prevent your baby from sleeping. Ensure that all windows within the nursery are not within the reach of your baby. It is wise to only have the essential furniture and accessories in your nursery. Such essential items include cradle, rocking chair, crib, and a changing table.

Do remember that your baby's safety should be the number one priority before and after putting together a baby's nursery.
